Haruki Murakami wrote in “The Kidney-Shaped Stone that Moves Every Day”: “What a writer is supposed to do is observe and observe and observe again, and put off making judgments to the last possible moment,” while Hemingway said that “when writing a novel, a writer should create living people; people not characters.”
In this workshop, we will attempt to create characters who are as real as any person off the page. Through exercises and examples, we will get to further know and make real the characters in our first drafts. As Tess Gerritsen said, “My most vivid characters have been built not through any deliberate process, not through any pre-planning, but through continuous, relentless acquaintances.”
