“Writing is intense, and scary and frustrating, and can be all consuming but I like the madness,” says Gledé Browne Kabongo, author of spellbinding, nail-biting thrillers including The Winds of Fear. She will be sharing some of her expertise in a Master Class, Protagonist Vs. Antagonist – Crafting Powerful and Complex Opposing Forces That Will Make Your Stories Unforgettable on Saturday, October 17th. Hers is one of the 14 different classes being offered at the NH Writers’ Project’s 603 Sit ‘n Click Writers Video-conference.

In Kabongo’s class, participants will break down key steps in creating the tension and conflict between their two principal characters, and how the characters’ opposing goals can make the story “unputdownable.”

“I chose to focus on this topic because the protagonist and antagonist are equally matched,” says Kabongo. “They both have strong motivations and complexities — making powerful stories readers won’t want to put down.” As a result of attending this class, Kabongo hopes students will come away with the practice of “spending as much time developing their antagonists as they do their protagonists because it elevates the stories they’re trying to tell, and keeps readers invested in the story from beginning to end.”

Kabongo is originally from the Caribbean and is now residing in North Attleboro, MA (outside of Boston). She holds a master’s degree in communications, and has spoken at multiple industry events including the Boston Book Festival. She’s an instructor with the New Hampshire Writers Project (NHWP) where she leads workshops ad webinars on writing fiction. Gledé lives outside Boston with her husband and two sons.

In addition to the breakout sessions, the event features keynote presenter Brunonia Barry whose book, The Lace Reader, became a NYTimes best-seller; NHPR’s Peter Biello as conference moderator; two panel presentations; and the opportunity for writers to submit their pitches for their books to a panel of industry professionals for feedback.
