The Concord Monitor’s Sunday Book Page Features NHWP Authors

If you didn’t happen to catch it, the Concord Monitor published an article about some of our NHWP members who wrote books in 2020. The article featured brief descriptions of the books and the book cover as a promotion for holiday gift buying.

Give the Gift of Literature this Holiday Season

It’s coming down to crunch time to finish holiday shopping.  One universally favorite gift is a good book to read during the long hours of winter and in this particular year more quarantining. Many folks are looking to buy locally in support of our small businesses this year. With this in mind, we have put together a list of 2020 book releases from NH authors. The selection is varied and includes travel, mystery, historical fiction, fantasy, and a look at giants of journalism.

The book describes highlights of five Colorado National Parks — Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado National Monument, Mesa Verde National Park, Royal Gorge, and Arches National Park, which is in the state of Utah.  Georato provides tips for potential travelers that will be helpful for anyone planning a similar trip – where to go, what to do and eat. Available at Amazon (paperback and Kindle) and Barnes and Noble (NOOK only)

Bikini Cowgirls of the Urban Legion by Dave Agans (the second book of the trilogy)

Cowgirls. Bikinis. Murderous media conspiracy. What could go wrong? Find out in this hilarious satire featuring life-like dolphins and a heroine looking for answers who winds up in the middle of a reality TV show.  Agans’ writing makes these ridiculous circumstances convincing and entertaining. If you like Kurt Vonnegut, you will enjoy this book. Look at That! Discover the Joy of Seeing by Sketching written by Bobbie Herron

You will learn how seeing-and-sketching can calm your mind and how keeping a sketchbook can change your life. The author’s bold promise is “you might be on the verge of falling in love—with looking, with seeing, and finally with sketching.” Available from independent bookstores including Gibson’s and The Toadstool Bookshops; also available as eBook and paperback at Amazon.

Stories from the Rolodex, Important Figures of Journalism in Their Own Words written by Beverly Stoddart

Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein may be the names we know. But, like those fearless, pioneering reporters from the golden age of journalism, there were many more news men and women who never made the headlines. In this book, meet some of the most important figures of journalism who worked in the same era reporting on location in Vietnam, from riots, plane crashes and more. Their astonishing stories, offered in their own words, show the behind-the-scenes workings of people who knew how to get the job done. Available in paperback on Amazon or through the author’s website: www.BeverlyStoddart.com.

The Assassin’s Throne written by E. Chris Ambrose

This archaeological thriller includes a Templar betrayal, a mechanized throne and a madman who would be king. This is the tale of a simple assignment going horribly wrong:  the Bone Guard spec ops team runs afoul of modern knights, ancient Assassins and the self-proclaimed King of Jerusalem, hell-bent on reclaiming his throne. Available in print at The Toadstool Bookshop, Nashua and as an eBook at Amazon.

The Hearth Witch’s Son written by Elaine Isaak

When Roger the kitchen boy told everyone he was the king’s bastard and raised an army to overthrow his tyrant father, he never expected to have to live that lie.  Can he use his mother’s legacy of witchcraft to win the war he never meant to survive? You will find out in this compelling fantasy novella. Available as a paperback at independent books stores including Gibson’s and The Toadstool Bookshops; also available as eBook and paperback at Amazon.

The Islanders Series: The Complete Trilogy written by Margaret Porter

Together for the first time and reissued in a single e-book, these three full-length historical novels are set on the Isle of Man and in London. Written by Concord’ best-selling author, this new edition includes: Kissing a Stranger, a tale of two desperate, scandalous risk-takers, each seeking a fortune. The Seducer, a marriage of convenience story connected to the linen-making industry, infused with love and longing; and Improper Advances, in which duty competes with desire, and an opera singer’s private dreams conflict with the demands of her profession. Available as an eBook at Amazon.

The King of Next Week written by E.C. Ambrose

This historical fantasy novella follows a Civil War veteran who sails off with a load of ice and returns with a Djinn wife to coastal Maine.  The book explores a time of racial division, friendship and a bit of magic. Available from independent bookstores including Gibson’s and The Toadstool Bookshops; also available as eBook and paperback at Amazon.

All of the authors in this list are members of the New Hampshire Writers’ Project. Please remember to support your local independent bookstores during this season and throughout the year to come.
