Scrivener: Using Research Effectively, with Alison Murphy (Online Webinar)

Wednesday March 18, 2020, 7-8pm

So you’ve been introduced to the basics of Scrivener. Maybe you’ve even started using it to get your binder in order or create new scenes. But now it’s time to tackle the big one: research.

Whether you’re a fiction or nonfiction writer, we all use research. Whether you’re a fantasy writer plumbing your own brain for world-building material, a historical fiction writer trying to figure out what to do with all these old maps, or a journalist wondering how to keep track of all those source footnotes, research is a challenge that all of us face.

In this webinar, you will learn to keep track of your research materials, whatever they may be. Using Scrivener’s research section, you will learn to import, categorize, and organize your research; and be able to fine it when you need it.  We will also explore bookmarks, keywords, and metadata and how you connect that research to the parts of your manuscript where you most need them. We will also go over the more speculative aspects of research, for the fiction writers out there––learning tools that will help you track your own internal research about your characters and settings, and treat them as seriously as you would any other kind of research.

At the end of the class, there will be an opportunity to ask questions about your own projects. You will come out of the class with an improved toolkit for organizing and using your materials, and a plan for tackling your own research.

This class is appropriate for writers of all genres.

Note: if you don’t have Scrivener, please download a free trial before class begins. Students will need basic computer skills, but do not need to have an understanding of Scrivener itself. Please keep in mind that the instructor uses the Mac version of Scrivener, so if you are a Windows user some features may be different (though we will also go over some of those basic differences in class, to keep you from getting lost).

WHERE: On the internet! You can dial in from anywhere. Most people attend from home.

WHEN: Wednesday March 18, 7-8pm

COST: This webinar is $20 for NHWP members or $30 for nonmembers. Register now to ensure your spot in the class using the “Register now” button below.
