Reading Like a Writer, with Bonnar Spring and Amy Ray

Don’t let an action-packed plot whisk you through a story. As a writer, slow down and pay attention to how the writer is getting you to turn those pages and stay up way past your bedtime. In this workshop, learn what it means to read like a writer. Bonnar Spring will delve into the process of “micro” reading—looking at different elements of a book and figuring out what does, and doesn’t, work for you and how to translate your findings into your own writing. Amy Ray will then discuss the “macro” observations that can be made about pacing and plot. Participants are encouraged to have a favorite book with them during the workshop.

Author Bonnar Spring

Bonnar Spring writes mystery/suspense/thriller novels with an international flavor. Her first novel, Toward the Light, was published by Oceanview Publishing in January. Her short story, “Payback” appeared in the New England crime anthology Landfall and was nominated for the Robert L. Fish Memorial Award. A nomad at heart, Bonnar hitchhiked across Europe at sixteen and joined the Peace Corps after college. She currently divides her time between cottages on a New Hampshire salt marsh and by the Sea of Abaco. You can find her on Facebook, on her website BonnarSpring.com, or @gretagarbo42 on Twitter.

Author Amy Ray

After years of running her own business, Amy Ray was ready to let her imagination soar. She writes adult mystery/suspense/thriller novels and stories for children. About her first thriller, Dangerous Denial, Publishers Weekly wrote: “tightly plotted suspenseful moments and a deftly-executed plot twist combine to keep readers holding onto this novel until the wee hours.” Amy also has a series of short stories about a small town reporter and her crime-solving pug featured in the Murder Ink anthologies published by Plaidswede Publishing. You can find her on Facebook, on her website WriterAmyRay.com, or @WriterAmyRay on Twitter.
