This post is part of our ongoing “Meet the Team” series, where we introduce the dedicated individuals who help shape and support the New Hampshire Writers’ Project. Each conversation highlights the unique backgrounds, passions, and perspectives that make our community stronger.
Today, we’re excited to spotlight Susan Friedburg, Financial Operations Specialist and Executive Administrative Assistant, who lends her extensive expertise to help keep NHWP strong behind the scenes.
With over 30 years of experience in financial management—including a decade dedicated to nonprofit organizations in New Hampshire and Maine—Susan ensures that NHWP can continue providing meaningful programs and opportunities to our members. Beyond her professional background, she brings a lifelong love of reading and a deep appreciation for the art of storytelling.
We asked Susan a few questions about her journey, her role with NHWP, and her personal connection to books and literature.
What inspired you to join the NHWP team?
I was raised by a voracious reader—my mom was MENSA smart and could finish a book every two or three days. Weekly visits to the library were part of my childhood. While I read what was required in school, it wasn’t until after graduate school that I joined my first book club. That experience taught me to listen, reflect, and share. I’ve now been part of two official book clubs, and I absolutely love hearing how a book impacts others or connects to their personal lives. For me, supporting storytelling through NHWP feels like a natural extension of that joy.
What unique skills do you bring that help with NHWP’s mission?
The financial responsibilities of running a nonprofit are critical to its success. With my background in financial management, I’m privileged to bring those skills to NHWP, supporting the organization’s ability to grow and thrive.
What excites you most about the future of NHWP?
The enthusiasm of the Board excites me the most. There’s such a strong commitment to offering rich, meaningful programming for our members. I’m especially passionate about initiatives that encourage collaboration and relationship-building within the writing community.
What’s your go-to comfort food while reading?
I have two: dark chocolate chips and dried, salted edamame beans.
What book is currently on your nightstand?
I always keep a steady list of requests queued up through my local library, thanks to the monthly Book Review magazine I grab there. Right now, I’m reading The Catalyst: How to Change Anyone’s Mind and Bury My Bones in the Midnight Soil. This summer, I also enjoyed my first Jodi Picoult novel, Mad Honey.
Outside of her work with NHWP, Susan enjoys traveling, relaxing at her oceanfront cottage, and spending time with family and friends. She lives in Bedford with her husband and son.
We’re grateful for Susan’s dedication and the expertise she brings to the NHWP community—and we know her passion for storytelling and connection will continue to inspire us all.
Stay tuned for more posts in this series as we continue to introduce you to the incredible people behind NHWP.
