Building Better Book Covers

Presented by Alex Camlin (Workshop)

Saturday October 26, 2019, 1:30-4:30pm

More books are being published than at any point in the past; and readers have instant access to an overwhelming selection of choices. Effective book covers—clever, iconic, current, culturally-aware, sophisticated and memorable—are more important than ever.  The book cover signals the subject, tone, and intended audience to a potential reader, all in a few seconds or less. This workshop on book cover design will offer an overview of the practice in both traditional and self-publishing. The presentation will include:

  • Examples of successful cover design,
  • In-depth examples of the design process,
  • Advice for writers on working with designers and thinking critically about the “face” of their books.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a favorite book cover for a short group discussion and critique.

Alex Camlin is the principal of AC/D, a design studio based in greater Boston. With 20 years of experience as an art director in publishing, his recently founded practice is limited almost exclusively to books and their covers.
